The Japanese consumer wishing to buy U.S.-manufactured products will soon be able to browse through American mail-order catalogues at 70 Subaru auto dealers in Japan.
The Subaru World Trading Co., established by Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. of Japan, maker of Subaru automobiles, will begin the service in November with initial capitalization of $1.4 million. The Tokyo-based company eventually plans to expand to 1,000 outlets.
Participating Japanese dealers will display catalogues from at least 10 American mail-order firms, offering such products as premium gifts, collectibles, sporting goods and fitness equipment.
Because of Fuji Heavy Industries’ ties to Indiana through its joint venture automobile plant, Subaru World Trading will feature Indiana-made products. First-year sales are estimated at $140 million.
Subaru World Trading customers will be able to place orders in Japanese and take delivery at home.
