Coach Duffy Daugherty Dies

Hugh (Duffy) Daugherty, who guided Michigan State University’s football program to national prominence and two Rose Bowl appearances in 19 years with the Spartans, died early today in Santa Barbara. He was 72.

Officials at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, where he had been hospitalized since Aug. 23, said he died about 4:30 a.m. of kidney failure associated with longstanding heart disease. He became head coach at Michigan State in 1954 and compiled a record of 109-69-5, highlighted by his powerhouse teams of 1965 and 1966, which went 19-1-1 with stars such as Gene Washington and Bubba Smith. He had retired to Santa Barbara in 1975.
