Forest Fire Smoke Clouds Borneo Island

JAKARTA, Indonesia — Thick columns of smoke from major forest fires have shrouded much of the island of Borneo and hampered aviation since the beginning of the month, Indonesia’s official Antara news agency reported Thursday.
Smoke obscured most of Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of Borneo, the National Meteorological and Geophysics Bureau reported. Reporters flying over the world’s third largest island in a helicopter last week counted 37 fires as the region baked under a drought.
