The largest fire in Angeles National Forest this year was contained Thursday after charring about 11,000 acres of rugged terrain north of Lake Castaic.
Investigators determined the fire was “man-caused,” but they were uncertain whether it was started accidentally or by an arsonist, said Susan Blankenbaker, a spokeswoman for the U. S. Forest Service.
The Forest Service estimated that it cost $1.3 million to fight the fire, Blankenbaker said. Only 120 of 1,100 firefighters who battled the blaze remained on fire lines Thursday night, Blankenbaker said.
There have been 176 fires in Angeles National Forest this year, but until the latest one, only 1,500 acres had been burned, she said.
