MCI Communications Corp. Chairman William G. McGowan has resumed an active role in the company after recovering from a heart transplant. The Washington-based company, the nation’s second-largest long-distance carrier, said McGowan remains chairman and will share the new office of chief executive with Vice Chairman V. Orville Wright. Day-to-day operations of the company remain in the hands of Bert C. Roberts Jr., president and chief operating officer.
McGowan, 59, suffered a heart attack in December and underwent heart-transplant surgery April 25 at Presbyterian-University Hospital in Pittsburgh.
