$760,000 Updating Planned for Tigers’ Facility in Florida

DETROIT — Joker Marchant Stadium, the Detroit Tigers’ spring training facility in Florida, will undergo a $760,000 renovation and expansion under terms of a 10-year lease extension announced between the American League club and the City of Lakeland.
Terms of the deal, recommended by Lakeland City Manager Gene Strickland and approved unanimously by the Lakeland City Commission, call for a new lease agreement to take effect in 1992 and keep the Tigers in the central Florida town through 2002 with a 10-year renewal option that could extend the lease through 2012.
The current lease expires in 1991, according to Jim Campbell, president of the ballclub.
Under the agreement, the Tigers will advance $380,000 interest-free to Lakeland. The Tigers will retain the city’s 12% share of the stadium ticket revenue each year until the advance has been repaid in full. The expected time of reimbursement is eight to 10 years, Campbell said.
Work is scheduled to begin in October, Campbell said.
Highlighting the renovation will be he construction of a new left field grandstand.
