Blanche Manning Perry, 48, of Gaffney, S.C., the wife of former major league pitcher Gaylord Perry, died in a traffic accident Friday near Lake Wales, Fla., when another car ran a stop sign and hit her car broadside.
The driver of the other car, Harold I. Arnold, 66, of Winter Haven, was listed in fair condition at Winter Haven Hospital. According to the police report, Arnold ran a stop sign, hit the left front of Mrs. Perry’s car and flipped twice. He survived the crash, but Mrs. Perry died instantly.
Gaylord Perry pitched for 21 seasons in the major leagues with eight teams. He began coaching the baseball team at Limestone College in Gaffney last year.
