Paraguay Gets Europe Protest on Rights Abuse

BRUSSELS — The 12-nation European Communities has protested to Paraguay over the closing of the weekly newspaper Pueblo and urged President Alfredo Stroessner’s government to respect social and political rights, the communities’ headquarters here said Friday.
A statement said the complaint was handed to Paraguayan authorities Wednesday. It said that the 12 were also concerned over recent arrests of opposition leaders and that respect for citizens’ rights was essential for progress towards democratic rule.
