Five highway projects worth more than $47 million will proceed as a result of windfalls to the California Transportation Department, Deputy Director Bill Ihle said. California qualified for the additional federal money because the state had plans for using funds that other states were unable to use, Ihle said. As a result, the state will advertise for bids on the $30.9-million Santa Barbara cross-town freeway, the $5-million Toro Park interchange and a freeway extension on California 68 between Salinas and Monterey, Ihle said. The state will also advertise bids for a $4.3-million expressway on California 68 in the Coachella Valley and additional passing lanes and curve improvements on U.S. 50 in Eldorado County, for $8.5 million.
