Far West Roundup : San Jose State Wins 10th Game in a Row, 24-3

Quarterback Mike Perez threw for two touchdowns, and running back Kenny Jackson scored another as San Jose State extended its winning streak to 10 games with a 24-3 victory over Division I-AA opponent Eastern Illinois.

The Spartans’ defense held Eastern Illinois to just three yards rushing.

Perez, who last year led the NCAA in total offense, completed 27 of 45 passes for 291 yards. His touchdown passes came on plays of 27 yards to Johnny Johnson and Guy Liggins.

Jackson rushed for 80 yards in 12 carries.

Wyoming 27, Air Force 13--Gerald Abraham rushed for 94 yards and one touchdown, while Craig Burnett threw for 253 yards at Laramie, Wyo., as Wyoming crushed Air Force in a Western Athletic Conference game.

Wyoming’s victory was the first as a head coach for Paul Roach, the Cowboys’ 59-year-old athletic director who assumed the coaching duties this year when Dennis Erickson left for Washington State.

Roach had been an assistant during the Cowboys’ strong years in the late 1960s. He also served as an assistant coach for several NFL teams before he returned to Wyoming as athletic director two years ago.

Burnett completed 23 of 46 passes.

Texas El Paso 31, New Mexico St. 0--John Harvey rushed for 110 yards and 2 touchdowns to power the Miners to a convincing win before a crowd of 44,897 at El Paso, Tex., which set a regular-season home attendance record.

The previous record was 42,385 against Air Force last season.

Harvey, who carried 19 times in all, scored his first touchdown on a 7-yard run in the first quarter and caught a 16-yard scoring pass from Pat Hegarty in the second quarter.

Hegarty’s other touchdown pass was a 17-yard toss to Harold Collins in the third quarter.

Utah 24, New Mexico 20--At Salt Lake City, Chris Mendonca threw two touchdown passes to tailback Eddie Johnson, and Scott Lieber kicked three field goals to help Utah to a Western Athletic Conference victory over New Mexico.

Mendonca completed 27 of 42 passes for 383 yards in the season opener for both teams. He threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Johnson in the second quarter and a 13-yarder to him in the third.
