* * * “KING’S RECORD SHOP.” Rosanne Cash. Columbia. Rosanne Cash has the rebellious soul of a rocker and the bloodlines of Nashville royalty. A streak of defiance worthy of her legendary dad, Johnny, along with a considerable amount of raw talent, has carried her to the front ranks of the pop/country scene. A warm and distinctive vocalist cut from the same cloth as Emmylou Harris, Cash has superb taste in material and is a writer to be reckoned with. The standouts here include an upbeat feminist call to battle by Eliza Gilkyson titled “Rosie Strike Back;” John Hiatt’s sneaky calypso tune for cheating lovers, “That’s the Way We Make a Broken Heart,” and “Green, Yellow and Red,” a barn-burning rocker by John Klizer. Cash may not have written these tracks, but as with all of her recordings, it’s her sweet and shining voice that illuminates them.
