Paul Rosenfield refered to the film critic of the Toronto Globe and Mail as “an utterly ordinary source” (“Here’s the Buzz on the Buzz,” Aug. 9).

The critic in question, Jay Scott, is probably Canada’s pre-eminent film critic; he appears frequently on national television and the Toronto Globe and Mail is actually a national newspaper, read from coast to coast. Toronto itself is a bustling movie metropolis, second only to Los Angeles and New York; it’s also home to one of the world’s largest and most important film festivals.

Rosenfield’s characterization of Scott as “utterly ordinary” would therefore seem to have little foundation except perhaps for the fact that Scott is not an American film critic. This brand of self-centered conceit does not befit a newspaper that hopes to bring us closer to the world.
