McMartin Trial Hears Girl Tell of Rape, Sodomy

The second child to testify in the McMartin Pre-School molestation trial said Thursday that she was raped and sodomized by the chief defendant in the case, Raymond Buckey, and saw him sexually abuse other students.

The girl, now 11, also testified she was molested by Buckey’s mother, Peggy McMartin Buckey, and that both defendants, who were teachers at the preschool, drove her and other students to a farm and a carwash to be molested.

The witness was the second child to tell the jury that she had been sexually abused by Buckey, 29, and his mother, 60, while enrolled at the now-closed Virginia McMartin Pre-School in Manhattan Beach.

12-Year-Old Testifies

A 12-year-old girl testified last week that she had been molested by both Buckeys.

The 11-year-old testified that Raymond Buckey molested and raped her more than once in a classroom at the school while another child stood lookout for parents.

The girl said that “many times” she volunteered to be the lookout “because I didn’t want to be inside getting touched and hurt.”

She testified that both Buckeys drove her and other students to a farm where everybody took their clothes off and played the “naked movie star game,” during which the defendants molested her.

The girl said Raymond Buckey also drove her and other students to a carwash.

“He took me into the bathroom (at the carwash) and he took his clothes off and he told me to take my clothes off” and then molested her, she testified. The girl said she saw Raymond Buckey take the other students into the same bathroom one by one before driving them back to the school.

Prosecutors said the girl was molested on numerous occasions from 1979 to 1982. Her brother, another alleged victim in the case, also is scheduled to testify at the trial, which is expected to take more than a year. The alleged sexual abuse suffered by the two siblings represent more than one-third of the 99 molestation charges filed against the Buckeys.

Raymond Buckey and his mother are on trial accused of sexually abusing 14 students at the preschool. He is charged with 79 counts of child molestation, while his mother is charged with 20 counts. Both Buckeys also are charged with a conspiracy count.

“Ray would pick me (to play the ‘lookout’ game) and he would tell me to swing real high on swings (in the school’s playground) and whenever I saw a mom coming, to come into the classroom and tell him,” the 11-year-old girl testified.

Spotted a Parent

She said that on at least one occasion, she spotted a parent coming toward the school to pick up her child and she ran inside to tell Raymond Buckey.

“Ray was there (inside a classroom) with some children,” she testified. “Ray was hurting and touching (female) kids in a way they didn’t like.”

She said she also saw Buckey sodomize and masturbate male students.

The girl testified that blue blankets were placed over the classroom windows during the alleged molestations.

The girl testified that the mother she had spotted came into the school and knocked on a classroom door, but got no response. When the woman returned a short time later, “Ray poked his head out and showed her her child and said, ‘Here you go, here’s your child,’ and away they went.”
