McDonnell Douglas has dedicated its new C-17 hangar, a $20-million building in Long Beach that will be the final assembly site for the new aircraft. The Air Force plans to purchase 210 of the C-17 aircraft at a cost of more than $25 million. The first flight is scheduled for 1990 and, when the C-17 reaches its full production rate in 1993, an estimated 4,500 employees will work in the building. Deliveries will continue through the year 2000.
