May Department Stores’ earnings rose 27% to $61 million in the second quarter. The St. Louis-based retailer said sales were up 8.8% during the quarter. Sales were up 5% at the company’s department stores, 8% at discount stores and 16% at specialty stores. In addition, interest expenses were down. During the second quarter, the company opened one discount store and 54 specialty stores. The company owns 2,848 department and specialty stores.
