Canada Frees Last of 174 Sikh Refugees

HALIFAX, Canada — Immigration authorities have released from detention all of the 174 Sikhs who traveled from Europe aboard an old tanker that secretly dropped them on a secluded Nova Scotia beach last month.
“There is no trace of evidence that any of you stand convicted of any offense in Canada or India,” immigration adjudicator Michael Sloan said Monday, as he released the last six Sikh boat passengers. “And there is no particle of evidence you ever engaged in acts of violence anywhere.”
