Arlene, the first named tropical storm of the 1987 Atlantic hurricane season, swirled to life with 50-m.p.h. winds and headed toward Bermuda, forecasters said. The storm, with winds extending about 100 miles east of its center, was expected to continue moving east-northeast at about 17 m.p.h., bringing squalls to Bermuda sometime today. While the storm was expected to strengthen, “conditions are not favorable for it to reach hurricane intensity,” a National Hurricane Center forecaster said.
