A man was charged with robbery Tuesday after he called police and confessed to taking $1,000 from a Sherman Oaks bank, authorities said.
Jon Stelly, 39, of Sherman Oaks, said on the phone that he robbed a City National Bank branch in the 4900 block of Van Nuys Boulevard about 11:30 a.m. Monday, Los Angeles police Detective Rockey Kennedy said.
Kennedy said Stelly handed a note to a bank teller, demanding $1,000 and saying he had a gun under his shirt, then took the cash and fled in a car.
About three hours later, he called police. “He got to thinking that he was going to be a hunted person, or his conscience started bothering him,” said Kennedy. “He decided he would have been caught anyway.”
Stelly, an unemployed carpenter who had been collecting state disability insurance, was arrested outside his apartment after Kennedy told him to put the cash in his pockets and walk out.
Stelly was being held in Van Nuys Jail in lieu of $6,000 bail, police said. He was scheduled to be arraigned today.
