A coach for the Polish Special Olympics swim team seeking to defect to the United States met with U.S. immigration officials, a Roman Catholic priest said.
Father Eugene Kazmierczak, the pastor of the St. Adalbert Catholic Church in South Bend, Ind., where the 14-sport competition was held, said Jozef Derbiszewski of Kadlub, Poland, met with U.S. officials at an undisclosed location to plea for political asylum.
