A Soviet zoologist who defected at a shopping mall after his research ship docked in Washington state has been granted asylum in the United States, immigration officials said. Pam Carrozza, assistant district director with the Immigration and Naturalization Service, said asylum was granted late Friday, a day after Dmitri Vinogredov, 30, left his comrades in Olympia and sought asylum. An FBI spokesman said Vinogredov was being assisted by local residents.
