Labor Leader I. W. Abel Dies
MALVERN, Ohio — I. W. Abel, a founder of the United Steelworkers of America union, died at his home today, the union announced. He was 79. Abel was president of the union from 1965 to 1977.
Iorwith Wilber Abel rose from being a Canton, Ohio, foundry worker to lead the steelworkers through a period of labor peace, booming production and surging wages and benefits. He said he believed his greatest accomplishment as union president was campaigning for passage of a federal law protecting employee pensions. His presidency also was marked by uniform wages and benefits under coordinated bargaining with the 12 leading steelmakers.
