Todd Martin and David Barr Advance in Surfing
Todd Martin of Encinitas and David Barr of Carlsbad were among those who advanced to the main event of the Stubbies Pro surfing competition Wednesday at Oceanside Pier.
The field, which originally consisted of 128 competitors, was trimmed to 32 before the fourth round began Wednesday. Half of the fourth-round heats were completed Wednesday, and the others are scheduled to be completed at 6:30 a.m. today. The first round of the main event follows at 9:30. A total of 18 surfers will advance from the trials to the 48-man main event, which includes 30 automatic qualifiers.
Frank Madrid of Carlsbad made it to the fourth round but was eliminated in a heat won by Martin.
Martin and Barr are the only San Diego area competitors to advance to the main event thus far, but three others have a chance.
Trevor Christ of Encinitas, Jim Palmer of Carlsbad and Rick Lasch of Del Mar were among those who had not completed the fourth round Wednesday and were scheduled to surf this morning.
Christ has won all three of his heats. Two of the four surfers in each trial heat advance to the next round.
Before Wednesday, Lasch had never made it to the fourth round of an Assn. of Surfing Professionals event.
Two other San Diego area surfers, Mike Lambresi of Oceanside and Brad Gerlach of Leucadia, have automatically qualified for the main event.
