Riot police in Panama City used shotguns and tear gas to break up anti-government demonstrations by dozens of students outside Panama’s National University, witnesses said. At least four people were injured, the witnesses said, but there were no immediate details. University Rector Abdiel Adames shut down the school indefinitely. The violence came as the Foreign Ministry issued a communique saying that any further U.S. interference in Panama’s internal affairs “will be considered as a hostile act against the Panamanian government.” The communique apparently referred to a U.S. Embassy statement criticizing the closure of opposition newspapers.
