Garden Grove : City Council Picks Date for Mayoral Election

The City Council, which failed Monday night to pick a successor to former Mayor Jonathan H. Cannon, has scheduled a Nov. 3 mayoral election.

Cannon, who was serving his fourth two-year term, resigned two weeks ago when Gov. George Deukmejian appointed him to fill a new judicial post in the West Municipal Court in Westminster.

In Wednesday’s edition of The Times, it was incorrectly reported that Garden Grove Councilman Robert F. Dinsen had been nominated by Councilman Raymond T. Littrell at Monday’s meeting to serve an unexpired term for mayor. In fact, Councilman Walter Donovan was nominated but lost by a 2-2 deadlock when Dinsen and Councilman Milton Krieger voted against Donovan, who said he would be a candidate in the Nov. 3 mayoral election.

Garden Grove is one of the few cities in California that directly elects its mayor. Cannon, who won election to his fourth term last November, was scheduled to serve until late 1988.

At Monday night’s meeting, Councilman Raymond T. Littrell nominated Councilman Robert F. Dinsen to serve Cannon’s unexpired term. However, Mayor Pro-tem Milton Krieger and Councilman Walter Donovan voted against Dinsen, resulting in a 2-2 deadlock.

Littrell later said he would not be a candidate for the post in November. The other three council members said they had not decided whether to run. Dinsen was one of three candidates who lost to Cannon in 1984.

City Clerk Carolyn Morris said the filing period for prospective mayoral candidates will be Aug. 6-27.
