Police in Kenya have tortured hundreds of suspected government opponents during a 16-month-old crackdown on a dissident socialist group, Amnesty International charged. The Kenyan Foreign Ministry denied allegations of systematic torture but acknowledged that two police officers have been arrested “for acts of torture” and face possible prosecution. The London-based human rights organization said that hundreds of people have been jailed on suspicion of being linked with Mwakenya, a clandestine opposition group, or merely for criticizing the way that the East African country is run. At least two people have died in custody, allegedly after being tortured, it said.
