State Health Director Kenneth Kizer warned that crema, a Latin style cheese product sold mainly by street vendors and at swap meets, may be contaminated with Listeria monocyhtogenes , a dangerous bacteria that can cause illness and stillbirths. Samples of the contaminated and illegally produced crema were confiscated from a South-Central Los Angeles residence where it was being made. Investigators said the building was infested with cockroaches, flies and ants. The Listeria organism is responsible for producing listeriosis, a sometimes fatal infection.
