The Sri Lankan government fired more than 1,600 striking doctors and dentists in a dispute over examination policies, which would permit private medical students to compete for jobs in state hospitals. Health Minister Ranjit Attapattu said the strikers will get their jobs back only as new recruits. Hospitals have been forced to turn away more than 2,000 outpatients without treatment, authorities said. The Government Medical Officers Assn. said its members will continue their walkout despite the firings.
