Sweden’s Patrick Sjoberg won the high jump at an international track and field meet in Barcelona with a leap of 7 feet 8 1/2 inches but was unsuccessful in attempts to surpass his own world record of 7-11.
Spaniard Luis Gonzalez won the mile in 3:54.62, followed by New Zealand’s John Walker (3:55.04) and Spain’s Jose Manuel Abascal (3:55.21). Britain’s Steve Ovett finished fifth.
American Rod Woodson won the 110-meter hurdles in 13.44 seconds, and Jamaican Bert Cameron won the 400 meters in 45.61.
