Junior World Golf Championships : Mickelson Two Strokes Off Lead After the First Round

SAN DIEGO —  Phil Mickelson of San Diego, the nation’s top-ranked junior golfer, is tied with four others at 72, two strokes off the lead, after Tuesday’s first round of the age 15-17 division of the Junior World Golf Championships at Torrey Pines.

Kevin Kemp of Greensboro, N.C., and Manuel Zerman of Durban, South Africa, are tied for first with 2-over-par 70s on the Torrey Pines South course. Bill Moore of Sacramento is one stroke back with 71.

Mickelson is tied with Damien Jamila of Honolulu; John Miller (the son of pro golfer Johnny Miller) of Salt Lake City; Mike Spencer of Sylvania, Ohio, and Francis Vaugh of Hershey, Pa.

Tom Abrahamson of Olathe, Kan., shot a hole in one on the par-3, 158-yard eighth hole, using a 7-iron. Abrahamson finished at 81.

In the girls’ 15-17 division, Brandie Burton of Rialto, Calif., and Michelle McGann of Riviera Beach, Fla., are tied for first with 3-over-par 71s at the Torrey Pines North course.

Lynne Mikulas of La Mesa is tied for fourth with three other golfers at 76.

In the boys’ 11-12 division at the Mission Bay Golf Course, Dean Wilson-Garbutt of Santee is tied for first with Michael Jones of Mesa, Ariz., with an 2-over-par 58.

The 15-17 divisions conclude Thursday at Torrey Pines. All other divisions conclude Wednesday.
