There are 1.7 million illegal aliens in California who qualify for amnesty under the new immigration law, officials said. According to a report released by the California Department of Finance, most of those eligible for legal status live in Southern California, 1.1 million in Los Angeles County alone. The estimates were made from an analysis of surveys, U.S. Census statistics and annual reports from the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, according to Mary Heim, who worked on the report for the finance agency.
