Pope’s Meeting With Waldheim
For several days now I have read stories where Jewish rabbis have been objecting to Waldheim’s Vatican visit as somehow cleansing the Austrian president of his alleged sins. Though they fear others may believe this interpretation, I have read it offered by no other commentators.
This reminds me of the Jewish opposition to the naming of a Carmelite monastery after a convert and to the placing of that facility next to a former concentration camp.
I get the impression that the Jewish feeling is that the Holocaust was solely a Jewish problem. This distortion of history, intolerance, and lack of forgiveness perpetuates some of the worst aspects of the regime which tortured so many.
