Few Americans foresee an economic downturn in the near future, the latest Gallup Poll found. Just 6% of those surveyed said they expected the current period of recovery (from the 1981-82 recession) to level off this year; 31% foresaw a downturn beginning sometime in 1988. Half of those polled predicted a strong U.S. economy lasting into 1989 or longer. Overall, the poll registered slightly less optimism than one taken in March, 1986, when 32% saw the economy cooling off by the end of 1987.
