Jack Mashin, Versatile Coach, Dies at 92

SAN DIEGO —  Jack Mashin, a former Grossmont High School coach who guided teams in various sports to 143 league titles in 36 years, died Sunday at his home. He was 92.

While at Grossmont High from 1923 to 1959, Mashin coached all boys sports, including football, basketball, track and baseball. During that period, he coached his football teams to 123 victories.

Mashin, who coached in San Diego County for more than 60 years, was inducted into the California Coaches Hall of Fame in 1966. In 1960, he was named track coach at Cal Western and won three consecutive district titles.

From 1964 to 1981, Mashin served as throwing coach for the Grossmont College track and field team. During that period, the team compiled a 115-13 record, including 11 conference championships.

“He was considered a legend in the world of coaching,” said Bob Larsen, UCLA track and field coach. Larsen was part of the same coaching staff as Mashin at Grossmont College.

Services will be held at Greenwood Mortuary Thursday at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting funds be sent to the Jack Mashin Scholarship Fund at Grossmont College, in care of Bob Haywood, or to the Jack Mashin Scholarship Fund at Grossmont High School, in care of William Davis.
