Rancho P.V. : Bus Route to Be Subsidized

The city will become the first outside of Los Angeles to pay to maintain a Southern California Rapid Transit District bus route. Using a $50,000 allocation from the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission, the city will contract with the RTD to continue service until the end of the year on Route 685, which would have been canceled this month.
In the meantime, said Public Works Director George Wentz, the city will look for ways to continue service permanently, through a contract with the RTD or other agencies, a city-operated bus or a variation of PV Transit, a publicly financed van transportation system.
Route 685 links the Palos Verdes Peninsula with aerospace industries in the El Segundo area, traveling through Torrance, Lawndale and Hawthorne. It carries only about 120 passengers a day in two round trips--a factor in the RTD’s decision to cancel it--but “the city felt this was an important service to our citizens,” Wentz said.
