Switchboards at Royals Stadium were swamped with calls from baseball fans expressing sympathy over the death of Dick Howser, former manager of the Kansas City Royals.
Howser, 51, died Wednesday, 11 months after having been diagnosed as having a cancerous brain tumor.
Several Royal officials spoke at a memorial service, including General Manager John Schuerholz and team President Joe Burke, who was diagnosed as having cancer several years ago and who visited frequently with Howser during the former manager’s illness.
Howser will be buried Saturday in Tallahassee, Fla.
