Nearly $140,000 was raised for the Los Angeles affiliate of the American Heart Assn. as 3,006 runners took part in Wednesday evening’s third annual Union Bank Heart of the City 5K Run through downtown Los Angeles, organizers said.
Steve Ortiz, 27, was the men’s winner, finishing the race in 14 minutes and 6 seconds. The fastest woman was Sylvia Mosqueda, 21, who covered the distance in 16 minutes and 9 seconds.
Despite concern that smog might pose health problems for the runners, Dr. David Olch, outpatient services director for Samaritan Health Services, said a breeze cleared away most of the smog.
