4 Teams Agree to Play in Mile High Tourney
DENVER — Four college basketball teams, including Colorado and Wyoming, have made verbal commitments to compete in a holiday college tournament at the Denver Coliseum, an organizer says.
Wyoming is scheduled to meet Cincinnati while Colorado is to take on Ilinois in the first Mile High Classic, set for Dec. 30, according to Roger Kinney, chairman of the Denver Organizing Committee for the 1990 NCAA Final Four tournament.
“We’re still waiting for signed contracts, but all four schools have given us verbal commitments,” he said. “It’s going to go.”
The two games will be part of an evening doubleheader, he said, adding that organizers hoped the event would expand into a full-scale holiday tournament in its second year.
There also are plans for a high school and junior players clinic Dec. 29, he said.
Wyoming posted a 24-10 record last season, including two victories and one loss in the NCAA tournament. Illinois was 23-8, with one loss in the tournament. Cincinnati was 12-16 and Colorado was 9-19.
