New Zealand’s Parliament, in a 39-29 vote, approved legislation banning nuclear weapons and nuclear-powered ships from the nation’s ports, officially removing the country from the ANZUS defense alliance with the United States and Australia. The action, making formal a policy begun by Prime Minister David Lange shortly after he assumed power in 1984, prompted the State Department to back a plan by Rep. William S. Broomfield (R-Mich.) to downgrade New Zealand’s official status from U.S. “ally” to “friendly country.”
