Top Three Seeds Advance in Boys’ Tennis Championships

The top three seeds won their quarterfinal matches in the San Diego Section boys’ individual tennis championships Wednesday at the San Diego Tennis and Racquet Club.
Top-seeded Michael Chang of San Dieguito defeated Marco Zuniga of St. Augustine, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4; second-seeded Carl Chang of San Dieguito defeated Jeff Miamoto of Patrick Henry, 7-5, 6-4, and third-seeded Tom Phanco of Bishop’s defeated Mike Askvig of Valhalla, 6-0, 6-2.
Valhalla’s Chris Numbers, the sixth seed, upset fourth-seeded Kerry Safdie of Clairemont, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
Numbers will play Michael Chang, the defending section champion, at 2:30 today, when semifinals will be played in singles and doubles. Chang and Numbers are two of the top players in the nation in the 16-under division, but this will be the first meeting between the two freshmen.
