NEW YORK — Two rare white tiger cubs on their way to a television appearance with Siegfried and Roy, the Las Vegas illusionists, were stolen today by thieves who drove off with a rental truck.
Police said the truck was found six hours later in the Bronx near Fordham University. The 10-month-old royal white tigers were still inside, unharmed.
The truck, with the tigers locked in cages in the closed back of the vehicle, was stolen about 6:30 a.m. from mid-town Manhattan.
Siegfried and Roy appeared on CBS’s “Morning Program” without the tigers and made an emotional appeal for their return, describing the animals’ birth at their Las Vegas compound.
Co-host Mariette Hartley said “both of them started to cry” when they discovered their loss. They later went into seclusion.
