SPORTSCOPE : Sprinters Lead 4-A Champion Muir Toward State Title

The Muir High School boys track team, which won the CIF Southern Section 4-A Division championship two weeks ago, will be one of the favorites in the CIF state track meet Friday and Saturday at Hughes Stadium in Sacramento.

The Mustangs, led by a strong corps of sprinters, are expected to battle with perennial powerhouse Hawthorne and defending state champion Taft of Woodland Hills.

For Muir to win, much will depend on sprinter Corey Ealy. The 5-10 senior has won the 100- and 200- meter dashes at both the CIF divisional and Masters meets.

He has posted top times of 10.36 seconds in the 100 and 20.80 in the 200 to rank among the top sprinters in the nation.

But he may have his hands full against his friend, junior Quincy Watts of Taft, who turned in blistering times of 10.17 (wind-aided) in the 100 and 20.69 in the 200 n the L.A. City championships last week.

Ealy also anchors Muir’s swift 400- and 1,600-relay teams. The Mustangs posted a winning time of 40.92 seconds in the 400 at the Masters and qualified fourth in the 1,600 in 3:15.14.

Muir also could score with seniors Marcus Robertson in the 800-meter run and Ricky Ervins in the 100 meters. Both placed fourth in the Masters, Robertson with a 1:54.31 in the 800 and Ervins at 10.79 in the 100.

The San Gabriel Valley has several other outstanding individuals in the boys meet.

Heading the list is Ganesha hurdler Dana Hall, fastest qualifier in the 110-meter high hurdles and the 300-meter low hurdles at the Masters. Hall, a senior, has posted top times of 13.84 in the 110 and 37.13 in the 300.

Two other standouts are Rosemead’s Aaron Mascorro, whose 9:08.45 in the 3,200-meter run last week was a Southern Section season best, and Rowland hurdler Mark Crear, who qualified in the 110 high hurdles and the 300 low hurdles.

The valley also has a title contender among the girls teams with Pomona, which will rely mainly on the sprinting and hurdling of Janeene Vickers.

The senior, who will attend UCLA, posted the top qualifying times in the 100 meters, 100-meter low hurdles and 300 low hurdles at the Masters.

Vickers was particularly impressive in the hurdles with Southern Section records of 13.40 in the 100 and 41.01 in the 300. She also posted a swift 11.89 in the 100 meters and anchored the 400-meter relay team that turned in the top qualifying time of 47.32.

The valley also has a strong individual in El Monte’s LaShawn Simmons, who qualified last week in the 100 meters, 100 low hurdles and long jump. Simmons had her best finish in the long jump, where she finished second to state favorite Madette Smith of Quartz Hill with a leap of 19-0 1/2. She also posted a 12.21 in the 100 meters and 14.33 in the 100 hurdles.

The only other multi-event qualifier is Mountain View’s Tracey Williams, who will run in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters. She may be stronger in the 3,200, where one of her top challengers is Karen Hecox of South Hills.

Pitcher Charlie Webb of Cal Poly Pomona, who set an NCAA Division II record with 15 consecutive complete games this season, has been named to the division’s second team All-American baseball squad.

Webb, a senior from Riverside, posted a 12-6 record and 2.64 earned-run average and completed 16 of 17 starts to lead the Broncos to third place in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.

Webb, co-pitcher of the year in the CCAA, was named Pomona’s most valuable player and selected to the All-NCAA Division II All-Far West first team.

Three other Broncos were named to the Far West team. Junior outfielder Keith Barrett, a former Royal Oak High standout who batted .274 with 10 home runs and 42 runs batted in, was selected to the second team and first baseman Tom Weeks and second baseman Dave Hajek made the third team.

Weeks, a senior, hit .320 with 11 homers and 58 RBI. Hajek, a sophomore, was the team’s top hitter at .353.

Outfielder Shaun Doyle of Cal State Los Angeles, who led his team in hitting, has been named to the NCAA Division II All-Far West baseball team.

Doyle, a junior who starred at Diamond Bar High, paced the Golden Eagles with a .364 average, 71 hits, 16 doubles and 49 runs batted in. He added 8 home runs and 17 stolen bases. He is second on the school’s career list in hits with 178 and runs batted in with 112.

Doyle was one of two Cal State players named to the All-California Collegiate Athletic Assn. team. Doyle made the first team and shortstop Mica Lewis was named to the second team.

Lewis, a sophomore from Westchester High, batted .332 and led the Golden Eagles with 23 stolen bases and 57 runs.

Brian Beveridge of Northview High in Covina and Clyde Turner of Muir in Pasadena have been named as coaches for the seventh Hall of Fame Prep All-Star Football Game that will be played Aug. 7 at Arroyo High in El Monte.

Beveridge will coach the East and Turner will coach the West along with L.A. Wilson’s Ray Evasion.

Beveridge coached Northview to a 10-1 record last year, its best mark ever, and was selected Times San Gabriel Valley coach of the year. The Vikings were 10-0 during the regular season and won the Valle Vista League title before losing in the first round of the CIF Eastern Conference playoffs.

Turner has been defensive back coach for Muir for seven years. The Mustangs have won 24 straight games and two consecutive CIF Coastal Conference titles.

Outfielder Bruce Fuller of Occidental College has been named to the third team NCAA Division III Academic All-American squad selected by the college sports information directors of America.

Fuller, a 5-10 and 155-pound junior who majors in math, has a 3.81 grade-point average. He hit .279 and stole a school-record 30 bases.
