Seeded Players Buchan and Moroweiki Beaten
Two of the top eight seeded singles players in the San Diego Section boys’ individual tennis championships were eliminated Tuesday in the tournament’s third round at San Diego Tennis and Racquet Club.
Mike Askvig of Valhalla High School advanced to today’s quarterfinals by defeating No. 5 Mike Buchan of University of San Diego High School, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6, with the last set going to a 7-5 tiebreaker. Patrick Henry’s Jeff Miamoto defeated Peter Moroweiki of Clairemont, 6-3, 6-4.
Top-seeded Michael Chang of San Dieguito High School--the defending section champion--beat Dan McKenzie of La Jolla, 6-2, 6-3. Chang’s brother, Carl, defeated Bill Tontz of USDHS, 6-0, 6-3. After losing a first-set 7-4 tiebreaker, St. Augustine’s Marco Zuniga beat Mike Miransgoff of San Dieguito.
In other matches, Kerry Safdie of Clairemont defeated Gene Carswell of Mount Carmel, 6-3, 6-1; Chris Numbers of Valhalla defeated Tim Clark of San Marcos, 6-0, 7-6; Tom Phanco of Bishop’s defeated Mauricio Cordova of Bonita Vista, 6-0, 6-1.
