Cauthen’s Colt Wins Eng. Derby

EPSOM, England — Reference Point, ridden by American Steve Cauthen, led from start to finish to win the 1 1/2-mile English Derby today. The 6-4 favorite, who had an operation two months ago to cure a sinus problem, won by 1 1/2 lengths.
Cauthen, who became the first American to win the English Derby in 65 years when he rode Slip Anchor to victory in 1985, was aboard Affirmed in 1978 for his Triple Crown victories over Alydar.
