County Cuts Back Mosquito Program

Westside and San Gabriel Valley cities must join existing mosquito abatement districts or form their own after July 1, because the county no longer can afford to provide the insect suppression service, Los Angeles County Health Services Director Robert Gates said Tuesday.

Because of budget problems, Gates said that several areas not within the two existing districts, where the county has provided mosquito abatement support, will be left to their own devices in the future.

In a story based on incorrect information from wire service reports, The Times on Wednesday erroneously stated that a county-funded program to suppress mosquitoes had been cut by Department of Health Services Director Bob Gates. The program was not cut. In addition, the program affects the South Bay and San Gabriel Valley, but not the Westside as stated. In addition, the county has not set a July 1 deadline for cities in those areas to begin paying for their own mosquito control services.

Gates described the move as a way to “reduce the county’s expenses” and “not something we’re happy with.”
