Gulf & Western Inc., the financial services, publishing and entertainment conglomerate, said that a continuing hot streak at its Paramount Pictures unit helped boost second-quarter profit 15.5% to $52.7 million. Its Paramount unit, which last year took more than 20% of the U.S. box office receipts, continued to reap the profits from such hits as the flag-waving “Top Gun,” the industry’s biggest hit in 1986, the Oscar-winning drama “Children of a Lesser God,” and the action-comedy “Crocodile Dundee.”
