Ending nearly a year of often acrimonious negotiations, the Los Angeles school board formally approved a salary agreement providing teachers with a 10% raise. The salary hike was also approved by the 21,000 members of United Teachers-Los Angeles. The preliminary vote count, according to union officials, was 97% in favor. The agreement calls for an increase in beginning teacher pay from $20,298 to $22,328 and a rise in maximum pay from $35,584 to $38,923. The contract will cost the district $151 million--$100 million to cover the teacher raise and $51 million to provide pay increases for administrators. A board rule in effect until June 30 requires that any raise granted teachers be automatically extended to management. All increases are retroactive to the beginning of the school year.
