Truckers Ordered to Turn In Extra Driver’s Licenses
WASHINGTON — The Transportation Department, saying too many truckers are hiding traffic violations behind a “wallet full” of driver’s licenses, today ordered truck drivers to surrender their extra licenses within 30 days or face stiff fines.
The measure is the first of a series of actions the federal government plans to take over the next few years in a crackdown against drivers of large trucks as well as commercial bus drivers who continue to operate despite piles of traffic violations.
The new regulation allows for penalties of up to $5,000 against both the driver and employer and a possible 90-day jail sentence for a driver found holding more than one operator’s license.
