COMMENCEMENT 1987
Whittier College’s 84th commencement was Sunday at the Harris Amphitheatre. Dr. Yuri Medvedkov, geographer, scholar and human rights activist, said: “You have the benefit of being in a nation that is the greatest democracy in the world. Yes, there are presently changes in the Soviet Union, but these changes are very minor steps. It will take decades of further work to make possible the improvements necessary to give the people of the Soviet Union the opportunities you now enjoy.”
Degrees: 271 diplomas awarded.

Medvedkov, doctor of humane letters.
Jack Smith, Times columnist, doctor of humane letters.
Dr. William F. House, director of research at the House Ear Institute and professor of otology at the USC School of Medicine, doctor of science.
The University of Redlands held its 78th commencement Saturday in the Alumni Greek Theatre. The keynote speakers were Glen and Les Charles, creators, developers and executive producers of television shows, and Redlands alumni. Les Charles told the graduates: “We contend it’s possible that avid reading of good writing can open us up to the experiences of people all over the Earth and all through the centuries and can thereby save the world.”
