Pepperdine’s Sznajder, USC’s Jensen Among 13 Seeded Men’s Players to Fall

ATHENS, Ga. — It was a day of upsets Wednesday at the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s individual tennis championships as only 3 of the 16 seeded players survived the first round.

Among the victims were top-seeded Richey Reneberg of Southern Methodist, second-seeded Andrew Sznajder of Pepperdine and fifth-seeded Luke Jensen of USC.

Reneberg was ousted by Shelby Cannon of Tennessee, 6-3, 6-3; Paul Mancini of West Virginia defeated Sznajder, 6-2, 6-4, and Den Bishop of SMU defeated Jensen, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Other seeded players who lost included third-seeded Philip Johnson of Georgia, fourth-seeded Steve DeVries of California and eighth-seeded Stefan Kruger of SMU.

Sixth-seeded Rick Leach of USC, seventh-seeded Andrew Burrow of Miami (Fla.) and Mark Kaplan of UC Irvine were the only seeded players to advance. Kaplan was among a second group of eight players assigned a seeded position but not officially given a seeded number.
