The 105-store beverage retailer, whose outlets are concentrated in California and Arizona, drew four bidders after being placed on the block last month by its parent, Safeway Stores. But Safeway reserved comment on a San Francisco Chronicle report that the bidding was won by Majestic Wine Warehouses Ltd., a major independent liquor retailer based in London. Majestic’s chairman, Giles Clark, also declined comment on the report but acknowledged participation in the bidding. Nonetheless, Bill Slone, New York-based director of the Beverage Network, said industry reports indicate that Safeway and Majestic agreed on a price tag estimated at about $102 million.
